The Rajshahi region, including Naogaon and Chapainawabganj districts, is renowned for its delicious mangoes, but approximately 30% of the harvest goes to waste due to a lack of preservation and processing facilities. The Department of Agriculture Extension anticipates a production of 275,000 tonnes of mangoes across 28,000 hectares in these areas.
Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President highlighted the potential for adding value to this seasonal cash crop and suggested establishing mango-processing plants. Although mango production has increased significantly, there are no significant mango processing facilities in the region.
Proper processing can lead to the production of various mango-based products like juice, soft drinks, pickles, jams, and jellies, boosting the region’s economy. Mango farmers have transformed cropland into orchards due to water scarcity, profitability, and the ease of cultivation. However, the increased life span of mango orchards may impact the production of other crops in the long run.
