The government of Bangladesh is considering implementing a 15 percent value-added tax (VAT) on the manufacturing of ballpoint pens within the country. This move may lead to an increase in the prices of pens, adding to the financial burden on students and their parents who are already grappling with rising costs of educational materials. Currently, various companies, such as Matador, Olympics, Econo, RFL Group, and Meghna Group of Industries, produce pens domestically.
The proposal to impose the new tax on ballpoint pens comes in response to the surging prices of educational materials, including pens, in recent times. If implemented, this VAT could contribute to a further increase in the cost of these essential items for students in Bangladesh.
