Bangladesh faces challenges in boosting private investment, with year-on-year private sector credit growth falling short of the government’s 11 percent target in recent months, as reported by the Bangladesh Business Climate Index 2024. In December 2023, the growth rate was 10.2 percent, down from 10.9 percent in December 2022, influenced by high domestic and international commodity prices and a depreciating Bangladeshi taka against the US dollar. Despite these hurdles, Bangladesh is seen as a growing investment destination compared to other emerging Asian economies.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) remains concentrated in traditional sectors like garments, textiles, energy, financial services, and pharmaceuticals, crucial for Bangladesh’s economic development and poverty reduction goals. However, barriers including sluggish regulatory reforms, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to finance have hindered further growth. In FY2023, the manufacturing sector attracted the highest net FDI of $1208.56 million, comprising 37.2 percent of total FDI. Overall, Bangladesh’s business climate slightly deteriorated in 2023, with the homegrown index decreasing from 61.95 to 58.75, highlighting ongoing challenges in improving the investment environment.
