Private University Supervision Hampered by UGC Manpower Crisis

Industry: Education, University

The Private University Division of the University Grants Commission (UGC) oversees 110 authorized private universities in Bangladesh with just 14 officials, far below the necessary 30 needed for effective management. This manpower shortage hinders routine tasks and delays responses to allegations of irregularities in universities. Responsibilities include ensuring academic quality, approving curricula, conducting inspections, and coordinating with the Ministry of Education. Private universities are concentrated in Dhaka (69), Chattogram (17), and other divisions, totaling 115 institutions nationwide. Despite UGC’s efforts, challenges persist due to limited resources and an accommodation crisis hindering expansion. Experts note the UGC’s historical focus on public universities has strained its capacity to regulate the rapidly growing private sector effectively.
