Farmers in Tangail’s char areas are turning to maize cultivation for its profitability, ease of growth, and affordability compared to other crops. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has encouraged modern cultivation methods, leading to increased production. Maize cultivation is gaining popularity throughout Tangail due to high demand and favorable market prices.
This year, farmers surpassed the target of 5,500 hectares, cultivating maize on 7,320 hectares. The production target of 51,700 tonnes is expected to be exceeded. The DAE provides necessary support through field visits and guidance on modern farming techniques.
Maize is primarily cultivated in Bhuapur Upazila’s char areas along the Jamuna River. Remarkable yields have been reported in various locations, including Bhadrashimul, Basudebkul, Borarboyra, and Gabsara union. Maize cultivation costs around Tk 8,000-10,000 per bigha, with potential earnings of Tk 50,000 per bigha.
Maize requires less irrigation and fertilizer, has a longer shelf life, and is easily stored after threshing. This season’s bumper harvest in Tangail can be attributed to favorable weather conditions, improved cultivation methods, and high-quality seeds. Maize cultivation in Tangail offers a sustainable income source with continued DAE support.
