Public Food Distribution Drops by 6%

Industry: Commodity, Food

Despite rising inflation, public food distribution in Bangladesh fell by 6% year-on-year in the first half of the current fiscal year. Public agencies distributed 13.78 lakh tonnes of rice and wheat until December 5, down from 14.63 lakh tonnes the previous year. The ousted Awami League government had reduced food distribution targets, despite soaring food inflation, which hit 13.80% in November. Experts criticize the decision, highlighting the severe impact on low-income people. The decline is linked to reduced grain transfers under the Food for Work (FFW) program. The government faces a stock crisis and procurement challenges, affecting timely food distribution. Calls for increased food imports and accurate decision-making are emphasized to address the crisis. The Directorate of Food expects overall distribution to increase once data is fully updated.
