Torrential rain last weekend of October 2023, flooded more than 16,400 hectares of farmland , causing substantial losses for farmers, per the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). Of the affected area, approximately 15,000 hectares were dedicated to Aman paddy cultivation, with maize and vegetables occupying the remainder. For instance, a farmer in Shajahanpur reported that his investment of Tk 12,000 in beans and gourds was lost due to submersion.
The heavy rainfall also resulted in three deaths, disrupted rail communication, and caused waterlogging and traffic congestion in Dhaka. Notably, Mymensingh experienced 378 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, and Rajshahi saw its highest rainfall in a decade, with 245.8 mm in 24 hours. Sylhet received 358 mm of rain, and Dhaka received 125 mm. In Bogura, known for vegetable production, 1,000 hectares were inundated, affecting 12,896 farmers, including 100 hectares of vegetable fields. The unfavorable weather coincided with rising vegetable prices, contributing to food inflation exceeding 12 percent for two consecutive months.
