Incessant rains across Bangladesh have led to a surge in prices for summer vegetables, aggravating the existing strain on low- and middle-income households. Prices of long aubergines increased by Tk 20-30/kg in a week, reaching Tk 100-120/kg, while purple round aubergines saw a Tk 40-50/kg surge in the last two weeks, priced at Tk 140-150/kg.
Other vegetables like pointed gourds, bitter gourds, arum, cucumbers, and okra experienced price hikes, with green chilies reaching Tk 240-280/kg. Limited vegetable supply and damage to early winter varieties due to the rain have contributed to the price uptrend. Farm egg prices rose to Tk 152-160 per dozen from Tk 140-150, attributed to increased day-old chick prices and reduced production.
Additionally, potato prices increased by Tk 5.0/kg, reaching Tk 50-55 for white potatoes and Tk 60-65 for red cardinals. Onion prices showed a Tk 10-20/kg increase in a week, with local onions at Tk 100-105 and imported Indian ones at Tk 80-90.
