Rampal thermal power plant faced a production halt due to a mechanical failure, causing significant disruption in the region’s power supply. The shutdown occurred on November 4, 2023. the managing director of Bangladesh India Partnership Power Company Ltd (BIFPCL), confirmed the issue, expressing hope for a quick resumption of production.
It’s not the first time the plant has experienced such disruptions, as a similar mechanical failure occurred earlier this year (2023) on April 15. The Rampal thermal power plant, a joint venture between India and Bangladesh, has been a critical project aimed at enhancing the region’s energy infrastructure, initiated in 2010. An agreement between the Bangladesh Power Development Board and India’s NTPC Ltd led to the establishment of the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company, which oversees the plant’s construction.
