Farmers in Chowgacha upazila of Jashore are facing a dire situation as rats have inflicted significant damage to their Aman paddy fields this season. Approximately 18,240 hectares of land in the upazila have been affected by rat attacks. Despite farmers’ efforts and favorable weather conditions that led to extensive rice grain growth, the intrusion of rats has shattered their hopes of a successful Aman yield.
To counter this menace, farmers have hung polythene sheets on bamboo sticks in their fields. Rats are known to cut rice plant roots and make holes in fields, predominantly at night. Agricultural officials acknowledge that, in 2023 ,many varieties of paddy were cultivated on 18,240 hectares of land in the upazila and the alarming increase in rat attacks this season, prompting farmers to take proactive measures to safeguard their paddy fields.
