Despite record-high potato production of 1.04 crore tonnes, prices are surging in Bangladesh, causing concerns for consumers with limited purchasing power. Within a week, prices rose by Tk 5 per kilogram to Tk 45 in Dhaka’s markets, attributing it to supply falling short of demand. The cost is 57% higher than in 2022 . Traders and large-scale farmers who store potatoes in cold storage are releasing stocks gradually, contributing to the price surge. This phenomenon occurs as demand rises for pricier vegetables during this period, depleting cold storage stocks. Although the government cites high production, the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association disputes the estimate, claiming it would not surpass 80 lakh tonnes. Insufficient market monitoring is attributed to the price rise.
