Despite experiencing drought and heat waves, the Horticulture Wing of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) anticipates a new record in mango production for the fiscal year 2022-23. The country’s mango production is expected to reach approximately 25.5 lakh metric tonnes, surpassing the previous year’s 23.5 lakh tonnes. This remarkable increase can be attributed to the expansion of commercial horticulture, the involvement of more farmers in mango cultivation, and the adoption of new methods and technologies. In the previous fiscal year, mango production suffered a decline due to natural calamities, prompting collaborative efforts among the wing’s officials and agricultural officers from various DAE wings to implement necessary measures.
The country has seen an expansion in mango cultivation, with land coverage increasing from 1,67,760 hectares in FY2015-16 to 2,02,968 hectares in FY2022. This growth in commercial horticulture has led to improved yields and higher profitability for farmers. By adopting modern mango cultivation approaches and accessing resources from horticulture nurseries and centers, farmers are now enjoying better livelihoods and economic opportunities.
