Red Sea Gateway Terminal to Operate Patenga Container Terminal

Industry: Logistics, Logistics & Shipping

The government of Bangladesh has made its final decision to appoint the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), a Saudi Arabian company, as the operator of the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) under the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). The Private Public Partnership (PPP) authority is currently handling the appointment process, and the Ministry of Shipping is expected to make the official appointment soon. The CPA has engaged the International Finance Corporation (IFC) as the Transaction Advisor (TA) to establish the terms and conditions for the operator’s appointment. Once the IFC submits its report, the final decision will be made. The construction of the PCT is complete, and formal operations are scheduled to commence this year after the operator’s appointment. The terminal, spanning 32 acres, will accommodate three container ships and one oil tanker simultaneously. The selection of RSGT as the operator followed a government-to-government negotiation between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, with five terminal operators initially expressing interest in the project. Equipped with modern handling equipment, the PCT’s strategic location near the Karnaphuli River estuary ensures efficient vessel berthing.
