Despite a drop in the national poverty rate in 2022, Dhaka, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions in Bangladesh witnessed an increase in poverty. The rise was primarily observed in rural areas, while urban areas experienced reductions due to economic growth. Divisions like Rangpur, Khulna, Mymensingh, and Rajshahi made significant progress in poverty reduction compared to 2016. However, income inequality and regional disparities have persisted and are on the rise.
According to the Household Income and Expenditure Survey of 2022, the national poverty rate decreased to 18.7%, down from 24.3% in 2016. Nevertheless, Dhaka and Sylhet saw their poverty rates increase to 17.9% and 17.4%, respectively, while Barishal became the most poverty-prone division with a rate of 26.9%. Experts emphasize the need for greater focus on equalizing factors to reduce inequality and ensure that benefits reach rural areas. Despite the pandemic’s impact, the reduction in national poverty suggests adjustments made by the population, although some remain skeptical about extreme poverty reduction figures.
