Bangladesh is poised to receive record-high remittance inflows in May, driven by the local currency’s depreciation against the US dollar. As of May 29, the country received $2.143 billion, a 38% increase from the $1.553 billion received during the same period last year. This figure also surpasses the remittances of the previous two months: April ($2.044 billion) and March ($1.997 billion). The total remittance earnings for FY’24 up to May 29 stand at $21.261 billion, over 95% of the $21.61 billion earned in the entire FY’23. Central bank officials attribute this surge to the recent 5.98% devaluation of the Bangladeshi taka and the increased remittances ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
