Despite a surge in expatriates using formal remittance channels, Bangladesh witnessed a 2.87% decline in overall remittance inflows from July to December 2023 compared to the preceding period. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) reports that 93.6% of remittances now flow through formal channels, up from 76.08% in 2013. Banks are the preferred method at 77.96%, followed by mobile banking (14.14%) and hundi (4.21%). Factors influencing the remittance sector include challenges such as currency exchange rates, economic conditions in destination countries, and regulatory factors. Analysts speculate on issues like increased demand for dollars in informal channels, higher money laundering activities, and the impact of a fixed currency exchange rate introduced in September. Policymakers are urged to address these challenges for sectoral stability.
