Approximately Tk 80,000 crore in revenue remains uncollected due to about 30,000 pending cases in Bangladesh’s Supreme Court, appellate commissioners, and tribunals. These cases include Tk 40,389 crore in income tax, Tk 27,152 crore in value-added tax (VAT), and Tk 12,622 crore in customs duties, as reported by the National Board of Revenue. Lawyers and revenue experts argue that vested interests often exploit legal processes to delay case resolutions, effectively withholding substantial revenue for extended periods. This backlog not only impacts government finances but also underscores systemic challenges in expediting legal proceedings related to tax disputes. Addressing these delays could significantly enhance revenue collection efficiency and improve fiscal management in Bangladesh, ensuring that tax revenues are promptly realized for national development initiatives.
