In FY 2022-23, Bangladesh imported 12.37 lakh metric tons of rice, generating Tk 364 crore in revenue. However, in FY 2023-24, rice imports plummeted to just 934 metric tons, resulting in a mere Tk 2 crore in revenue. This significant drop, a reduction of 12.36 lakh metric tons, represents almost a 100% decrease. Bangladesh primarily sources its rice from India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), this sharp decline is notable against the country’s annual demand of 2.04 crore tons, based on a per capita daily consumption of 328.9 grams. Despite this high demand, domestic production remains around 4 lakh tons, highlighting a critical need to reassess import strategies to ensure food security.
