The ride-sharing sector in Bangladesh is suffering from the recent unrest linked to the students’ job-quota movement, which peaked with the resignation of the Prime Minister on August 5. The turmoil, curfews, and internet shutdowns have drastically reduced drivers’ incomes. Ride-sharing services like Uber, with over 300,000 drivers and 6 million passengers, and Pathao, with 200,000 drivers, faced severe disruptions. Internet services were intermittently halted from July 17 to July 31, affecting app-based operations. Drivers report significant financial losses and ongoing fear of vandalism. Despite offices reopening, public apprehension continues to limit ride-sharing activities. Pathao’s co-founder confirmed substantial business impacts, with hopes for normalization soon.
