Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the European Union (EU) during January-September 2023 declined by 17.66% to 13.69 billion euros, down from 16.63 billion euros in the same period of 2022. This drop is attributed to the overall decrease in clothing imports by the EU due to high inflation and global economic uncertainty.
Despite the slowdown, Bangladesh emerged as the top knitwear exporter to the EU, surpassing China, with knitwear exports totaling 8.31 billion euros compared to China’s 8.27 billion euros. The EU’s woven garment imports from Bangladesh also decreased from 6.11 billion euros in 2022 to 5.38 billion euros in the same period in 2023. Industry experts attribute Bangladesh’s relative success to its competitiveness, strong compliance standards, and the shift in China’s manufacturing focus away from apparel.
