Bangladesh has experienced a 22.31 % year-on-year decline in garment exports to India during the first nine months of the current fiscal year. This drop comes despite an increase in shipments to other non-traditional markets. Exporters attribute the decline to shrinking demand in India and the growing influence of the “self-reliant India” campaign, alongside domestic challenges such as rising production costs due to energy price hikes, inconsistent gas supply, and recent wage increases that are eroding competitiveness.
During the period from July to March of the 2023-24 fiscal year, Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) exports to India totalled $645.18 million, compared to $830.51 million in the same period the previous year, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Both knit and woven garment exports were affected, with knit item exports falling by 25.90 % to $267.01 million, and woven garment exports dropping by 19.57 % to $378.17 million.
