A survey conducted by the Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB) project has revealed that most ready-made garment (RMG) factories are implementing positive social practices for their workers. These practices include healthcare services, daycare centers, insurance, fair-price shops, and menstrual hygiene products. Additionally, some factories are adopting environmentally friendly measures such as installing solar energy systems and using energy-efficient LED lights.
The ongoing survey, now in its second phase, aims to identify environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices in the export-oriented apparel industry. However, it found that factories are less willing to share information about governance issues, indicating a need for greater awareness.
MiB has partnered with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to gather data from member factories across the country. The second phase of the project, funded by the Laudes Foundation and GIZ, aims to bridge the RMG sector with international markets through digital technology and promote transparency and traceability in the supply chain. It also involves the development of a user-friendly mobile application for factory data updates.
