A recent study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) reveals that sustainable practices in Bangladesh’s garment and textile sector are predominantly driven by self-motivated marketing strategies, with 69.70% of factory owners citing self-motivation as the primary factor.
The research, presented at a CPD ceremony, indicates that 54.55% adopted green practices as a marketing strategy, and 39.39% aimed to enhance market competitiveness. The shift towards eco-friendly practices gained momentum after incidents like the Tazreen Fashion fire and Rana Plaza collapse, aiming to improve the country’s international image regarding workplace safety and labor rights. Currently, Bangladesh boasts 202 LEED-certified garment and textile industries, with 13 among the world’s top-rated green factories.
The study highlights the multifaceted benefits of green practices, including energy savings and improved worker health. However, challenges persist, including fair wages, and stakeholders call for collaborative efforts involving government, industry, and international brands.
