Experts at a roundtable on November 27, 2024, highlighted that Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry wastes nearly 70% of chemicals used in textile dyeing, costing billions annually and causing severe environmental pollution. While export-oriented factories rely on costly Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) to treat waste, many local-market producers lack such facilities, exacerbating pollution. In FY23, the country imported chemical products worth $7.5 billion, accounting for 12.2% of total imports. Specialists emphasized adopting advanced technologies, promoting chemical reuse, and enhancing worker awareness to mitigate chemical wastage and improve occupational safety.
Speakers stressed the need for industrial R&D, a central database for monitoring chemical use, and collaboration with chemical suppliers to ensure high-quality inputs. Addressing safety and environmental concerns, experts also called for compliance with international occupational health standards. The event urged joint efforts by industry stakeholders and authorities to achieve sustainability and align with global green legislation.
