Thousands of readymade garment (RMG) workers in Bangladesh have protested seeking an increase in their wages. While clothing manufacturers proposed a monthly salary of Tk 10,400, workers demanded Tk 23,000, with the current minimum wage at Tk 8,000. This labor strike has coincided with political turmoil and opposition-led strikes, adding to the unrest. Amid this instability, there is concern that buyers may reduce orders due to uncertainty.
Businesses deny involvement in these protests, emphasizing that workers have engaged in peaceful demonstrations. They believe external entities may be exploiting political unrest. The Ministry of Labour and Employment has convened a meeting to address the crisis, urging workers to refrain from demonstrations until the new wage structure is announced.
The ongoing crisis threatens the RMG sector’s stability, causing worry among stakeholders. The next meeting of the wages board is scheduled for November 1, 2023, with workers eager for a fair wage increase to resolve the situation.
