The latest report from Bangladesh Bank reveals that the country’s export industry, particularly in the ready-made garments (RMG) sector, faces challenges that can be addressed through inter-apparel diversification and skill development. The RMG sector’s earnings heavily depend on five items, with trousers, t-shirts, and knit shirts being the largest contributors, totaling $35.11 billion.
However, the sector’s overall earnings of $42.61 billion represent approximately 82% of Bangladesh’s total export earnings of $52.08 billion. To achieve sustainable growth, industry experts emphasize the need to diversify both products and markets, with a focus on high-demand man-made fiber (MMF) garments. Bangladesh’s current market share of MMF-based apparel is less than 5%, but by capturing 12% of the global MMF market and 20% of the cotton-based market, the country could potentially earn $95 billion from RMG exports by 2030. This shift is seen as essential due to rising global demand for MMF products and concerns over cotton production and environmental sustainability.
