Garment workers in Bangladesh are awaiting the government’s announcement of a revised wage structure for the readymade garment (RMG) industry, which is reviewed every five years. Workers’ representatives are seeking a minimum monthly wage of Tk 20,000, citing the impact of inflation on their living conditions. However, factory owners claim they cannot afford such an increase and are hesitant to propose a new wage structure. Experts suggest that the board should consider actual inflation and protect workers’ rights while ensuring the industry’s competitiveness in the global market. The country’s RMG workers currently receive one of the lowest monthly wages compared to other exporting nations, such as China, India, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
