The board responsible for recommending minimum wages for ready-made garment (RMG) workers in Bangladesh has appealed for a three-month extension as it failed to prepare a wage proposal within the initial six-month deadline. The board, formed in April 2023, has faced allegations from labor representatives who suggest that the delay may be a strategic move by factory owners to avoid increasing workers’ wages.
Currently, the minimum wage for RMG workers is set at Tk8,000 per month. Labor unions are pushing for a raise to Tk23,000-Tk25,000, considering the current inflationary environment. Factory owners contend that international market conditions and decreased factory activity should be considered. The delay is raising concerns about the possibility of labor unrest.
Centre for Policy Dialogue highlights that real income for workers has decreased due to rising inflation in recent years. A factory owner representative on the minimum wage board plans to propose wage adjustments this month.
