Efforts to establish alternative debt servicing for the Rooppur nuclear power plant( RNPP), bypassing US sanctions, have hit a roadblock as Bangladesh and Russia struggle to agree on payment in Chinese currency Yuan. The decision was made in April to resolve the stalled outstanding debt servicing due to Western sanctions preventing the use of SWIFT. However, the failure to finalize the payment method has disrupted the megaproject’s progress. The Rooppur plant’s Russian contractor, Atomstroyexport, has urged Bangladesh to resolve swift-code issues for repayment to local subcontractors. The failure to reach an agreement hampers the project’s uninterrupted operation and highlights the challenges of navigating sanctions and international payment systems.
