The prices of construction materials have gone up in the northern region of Bangladesh, along with the rest of the country, after the recent parliamentary election. Rod prices have increased by Tk 5,000 to Tk 10,000 per tonne, and there have also been hikes in the prices of cement, sand, and brick.
The Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) reported that the price of rod was previously Tk 80,000 per tonne but is now being sold at Tk 90,000 per tonne. The best quality rod is being sold at Tk 1 lakh, up from the previous rate of Tk 94,000. The rod price has gone up by nearly Tk 35,000 per tonne over the last two years.
The reasons for the price increases include a dollar crisis affecting the import of rod-producing raw materials and high transportation costs. The sudden price hikes have caused concerns among contractors and have led to difficulties in completing construction projects. Some traders are taking advantage of poor market monitoring to make quick profits.
