Bangladesh Bank has accumulated $809 million in escrow to repay loans and interest for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, following sanctions on Russia that have disrupted transactions. These sanctions, which include barring Russian banks from the SWIFT system, have stalled payments for over a year. Bangladesh borrowed $13 billion for the project, with principal repayment set to begin in 2027, though an extension to 2029 is being considered. Ongoing discussions are exploring alternative payment channels. Currently, 69% of the plant’s construction is complete, with a target completion date of December 2025.
