The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Bangladesh is on track to receive its inaugural nuclear fuel for Unit-1, signifying a significant development. Russia is delivering the fuel via a special air cargo that will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before being transported by road to the RNPP site, located approximately 218 km away. Virtual participation is anticipated from the highest authorities during the forthcoming nuclear fuel handover ceremony in early October 2023.
A simulated exercise for fuel reception, transfer, and preservation was conducted in August, involving pertinent agencies and representatives from the nuclear organization. Bangladesh has accepted a compensation guarantee of $300 million for potential transportation-related incidents.
The RNPP, featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW, is a major project facilitated through a substantial supplier’s agreement between Bangladesh and Russia, valued at $13.48 billion. Russia will maintain the supply of nuclear fuel for the plant over the next three years under the existing arrangement.
