Rising income-expenditure disparity, exacerbated by inflation and taxation disparities, is driving up poverty rates in both rural and urban Bangladesh, supported by Gini coefficient data. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), rural poverty rose to 29.4% in 2022 while urban poverty increased by 1.1 percentage points to 4.1%.
However, poverty in municipalities and other urban areas decreased to 11.2%. Wealth distribution shows 13.7% of households as the richest, with rural areas having 7.1% and city-corporation areas at 48.7%. Socioeconomic status is assessed through wealth quintiles, highlighting differences in household construction, water access, and asset ownership. Rangpur has the highest proportion of the poorest households, while Dhaka has the lowest.
