Several entities linked to a prominent business group and family have amassed around Tk 26,000 crore in six banks, according to data provided to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The banks involved include Islami Bank Bangladesh, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Exim Bank, Bangladesh Commerce Bank, National Bank, and First Security Islami Bank. After the pandemic, these firms transacted approximately Tk 109,000 crore, with a significant portion as loans. Recently, the NBR requested account details from 91 banks and financial institutions to ensure proper tax payments by the group’s members. This action follows a regime change in Bangladesh, which has led to increased scrutiny of individuals and companies close to the previous government. The Bangladesh Bank has also restructured the boards of six banks associated with this group. The NBR’s investigation extends to personal and business accounts of the group’s relatives, reflecting broader efforts to detect tax evasion.
