Cattle farmers anticipate an increase in the number of animal sacrifices this year, despite decreased purchasing power and higher animal prices. The sales have got momentum in farm level. They expect the demand to rise by at least 5% compared to the previous year. Animal sales have gained momentum ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, with 60-70% of animals already sold due to growing buyer demand. However, inflation has led to a decrease in demand for large animals and an increase in demand for smaller ones.
Farmers are receiving advance orders from regular customers to meet the rising demand for small animals. In 2022, a total of 1.21 crore sacrificial animals were prepared, with 99.5 lakh animals being sacrificed. Inflation and increased living costs have impacted the ability of some people to purchase sacrificial animals. While fodder and meat prices have risen by more than 20%, the overall number of sacrifices is expected to at least maintain or slightly increase compared to last year.
