The net sales of state-run savings instruments in Bangladesh fell sharply in June, showing a negative growth of Tk 33.81 billion compared to the same period last year. This decline followed a similar trend in May, which saw a Tk 30.94 billion drop, signaling reduced confidence in these financial tools. Over FY 2024, net sales decreased by Tk 211.24 billion, with encashments outpacing new investments.
The decline is driven by rising inflation, economic uncertainty, and financial challenges, making savings less attractive. As a result, the total outstanding amount of savings instruments dropped from over Tk 3.60 trillion in the previous fiscal year to Tk 3.46 trillion in FY 2024. Despite the government’s target of Tk 180 billion in net borrowing from savings schemes, results have fallen short. The introduction of an online system in 2019, which requires e-TINs and national identity cards, has also impacted participation.
