The sale of savings certificates in Bangladesh has declined significantly. In the first quarter of the 2024–25 fiscal year (July–September), sales amounted to Tk 14,992 crore, down 31% compared to Tk 21,656 crore during the same period last year. This data comes from a recent Bangladesh Bank report.
The redemption of savings certificates also decreased, with Tk 6,659 crore paid in principal during this period, compared to Tk 22,921 crore last year—a drop of 71%. Experts attribute the decline to political uncertainty, high inflation reducing middle-class savings capacity, and a shift in investment to treasury bonds and bank deposits offering higher interest rates. The net savings certificate balance also dropped to Tk 3.47 trillion, reflecting a reduced interest in this investment option.
