Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan are set to hold commerce secretary-level meetings in April to strengthen economic ties and sign a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), aiming to boost subregional connectivity. Scheduled for April 18-19 and April 24-25 in Kathmandu and Thimphu respectively, the meetings will address finalizing the PTA, transit, and customs issues. Bangladesh has formed expert delegations led by Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh. The forthcoming discussions follow virtual meetings in 2020 with Nepal and a 2022 session with Bhutan. The PTA with Bhutan, signed in December 2020, aims to reduce Bangladesh’s trade deficit, offering duty-free access to 100 Bangladeshi products in Bhutan and 34 Bhutanese products in Bangladesh. As transit-related fees are yet to be fixed, trial runs will precede full implementation. Determining transit routes remains pending, awaiting proposals from relevant ministries and departments.
