Sesame harvesting is currently underway in all seven upazilas of the district, with farmers experiencing a bumper production season. The favorable weather conditions have contributed to this year’s good yields and reasonable prices, encouraging the cultivation of sesame. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had set a cultivation target of 4,200 hectares with a production goal of 4,325 tonnes for the season, which has been exceeded due to the success of the farmers.
In the markets, sesame is being sold at prices ranging from Tk 3,500 to Tk 4,000 per mount, depending on its qualities. Barren areas like Daulatpur, Shibalaya, and Harirampur upazilas have seen a transformation as sesame cultivation has flourished in these sandy char land regions. The dry weather conditions prevailing throughout the district have been favorable for sesame cultivation, leading to increased production.
Deputy Director of the DAE highlighted the suitability of the district’s land for sesame cultivation and expressed satisfaction with the reasonable prices received by farmers. With more than 90% of sesame already harvested, the remaining harvest is expected to be completed soon.
