Shrimp farmers in Khulna, Bangladesh, are facing significant losses due to drying enclosures amid a heatwave. The lack of filtering sunlight has reduced water oxygen levels, depleting shrimp food supply. Despite increased spending on oxygen tablets, farmers are witnessing shrimp deaths.
Bangladesh’s shrimp exports fell 21% year-on-year to $298 million in fiscal 2023-24. The country cultivates shrimp on approximately 2.6 lakh hectares of land. Farmers like Bairagi have spent Tk 20,000 extra this season due to increased costs for oxygenation. The heatwave has affected the southwest region for over three weeks, particularly impacting areas like Batiaghata, Dumuria, Dacope, Paikgacha, and Koyra. Mondal, another farmer, faces losses after finding hundreds of dead shrimp. Fisheries officers emphasize the importance of maintaining suitable water temperatures and salinity levels.
Around 3 lakh shrimp farmers in Khulna are directly affected by the intense heat, with approximately 144,600 hectares of land dedicated to shrimp cultivation in the Khulna, Bagerhat, and Satkhira districts. The region’s average temperature has been around 40.3 degrees Celsius over the past 10 days.
