Significant Increase in Brick-Made Households

Industry: Building Material, Cement, Ready Mix

The latest report from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) reveals interesting trends in house construction materials. The use of bricks has witnessed a significant increase, with 47.84% of households opting for brick or cement walls in their main dwelling structure in 2022. This marks a notable rise from 30.50% in 2016 and 25.12% in 2010 at the national level.

In contrast, the usage of other materials like CI sheet, wood, mud, unburnt brick, hay, straw, bamboo, and leaves has declined. The proportion of households using CI sheets or wood in their walls was 41.97% in 2022, dropping from 49.33% in 2016. Similarly, the use of mud or unburnt brick decreased to 7.25% in 2022, compared to 11.02% in 2016.

These changes are also reflected in the choice of roofing materials. The use of bricks and cement for roofs increased from 10.37% in 2010 to 22.30% in 2022. On the other hand, the proportion of households using tin or CI sheet declined to 81.52% in 2022, compared to 84.29% in 2016.

It’s important to note that these trends vary between rural and urban areas. Rural regions show a higher usage of tin or CI sheet (85.90%), while urban areas exhibit a higher preference for bricks and cement (44.40%).
