In the fiscal year 2020-21, direct corporate tax expenditures amounted to Tk 85,315 crore, with six sectors benefiting significantly from tax subsidies. Around 40% of these expenditures went to six sectors, with microfinance receiving Tk 15,315 crore, the power and energy sector receiving Tk 8,380 crore, and hi-tech industries and economic zones obtaining Tk 4,612 crore.
The garments sector received Tk 3,438 crore, IT or software business received Tk 1,477 crore, and poultry and fisheries were allotted Tk 143 crore. The government argues that direct tax expenditures have various benefits, such as creating employment, stimulating the economy, promoting social balance, and providing industrial support. The data was made available in the Direct Tax Report 2020-21 published by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
