Small and medium importers in Dhaka and Chattogram have significantly increased imports since October, filling gaps in the commodity supply chain previously dominated by the S Alam Group. At least 30-40 companies, including Smile Food Products of Abul Khair Group, have ramped up imports of essentials like sugar, edible oil, and pulses, especially ahead of Ramadan.
The S Alam Group, unable to import raw materials since August, shut down eight factories, including those for sugar, steel, and oil. However, new entrants and existing companies like Meghna Group, Akij Group, and Sri Matri Bhandar have stepped up imports. Improved access to Letters of Credit (LCs) for smaller importers has ensured steady supply and stabilized prices, alleviating fears of shortages.
