Farmers in Bangladesh faced a decline in monsoon rainfall, leading to delayed planting of Aman paddy. The lack of natural irrigation forced farmers to use electric or diesel pumps, incurring extra costs. However, farms with solar irrigation pumps (SIPs) sowed the crop 15-20 days earlier and at a lower expense. Solar power contributes 80.4% (960 MW) to Bangladesh’s renewable energy. Of the 1,194 MW renewable energy produced annually, 2,877 SIPs represent 52.29 MW. The government aims to get 10% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. SIPs contribute 8% (50.4 MW) of total installed solar capacity. The government targets 176 MW of solar irrigation in its emission mitigation actions, with an additional 164 MW conditional upon external support.
