Soybean oil prices in Bangladesh have risen due to global supply shortages and price hikes. Over the past week, the local retail price of loose soybean oil increased by Tk 3-6 per litre, and bottled oil rose by Tk 5 per litre. Globally, the price of soybean oil increased by $80 to $90 per tonne, now costing around $1,030 to $1,040 per tonne, compared to $950 to $970 a month ago. This rise is attributed to supply disruptions caused by drought and fires in Brazil, a major soybean producer, as well as increased demand for biodiesel. In Bangladesh, loose soybean oil is now sold at Tk 148-158 per litre, and palm oil prices also rose from Tk 138 to Tk 142 per kilogramme. The supply in local markets has dropped by 25-30%, further driving prices up. Bangladesh’s annual demand for edible oil is 22 lakh tonnes, with 23 lakh tonnes imported in fiscal 2023-24. Without an increase in supply, prices are unlikely to decrease.
