The prices of 11 key spices in Bangladesh have surged between 4% and 127% in 2023, according to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data. The prices of onions and garlic have doubled, while cumin prices have almost doubled, marking a significant rise. Import-dependent spices like cardamom, cloves, ginger, and turmeric have witnessed increases up to 50% due to a stronger US dollar and additional taxes on imported goods.
The president of the Bangladesh Wholesale Garam Masala Traders Association noted that the industry faces challenges in opening import credit cards due to the dollar crisis. Despite new onion arrivals, garlic prices remain high, and ginger prices have surged from Tk 90–150 to Tk 200-250 per kg in a year. The overall import of spices, excluding onion, ginger, and garlic, reached over 176,000 tonnes in the fiscal year 2022-23, marking an increase of more than 30,000 tonnes within a year, as per National Board of Revenue data.
