The SS Power Plant, a 1320-megawatt coal-fired thermal power facility in Chattogram, Bangladesh, commenced commercial operations on September 18. This marks the country’s first major private coal-fired thermal power project, with two units each capable of generating 660 megawatts. The plant is a joint venture between S Alam Group (70% ownership) and Chinese companies SEPCOIII and HTG (30%). It attracted a substantial investment of $2.6 billion, making it the largest investment by a single private entity in Bangladesh. SS Power is expected to offer cost-efficient electricity production compared to other plants. Upon full operation, it will contribute approximately 293 million units of electricity per day and 880 million units per month to the national grid. This milestone project was initiated in 2016 through a collaboration between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
