Study Reveals More Than 60% Skills Gap in BD’s RMG Sector

Industry: RMG & Textile

A recent study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) has identified a significant skills gap of more than 60% among employees, particularly machine operators, in the country’s crucial readymade garment (RMG) sector. To ensure sustainable growth in the industry, the study recommends targeted job-specific training programs facilitated by the Skills for Employment Investment Program (SEIP), relevant professional bodies, and employers.

The study, conducted among 476 workers and employers across various factory sizes and locations, highlighted the need for profession-based training, especially for employees working with automated machinery. However, financial constraints hinder employees’ ability to pay for training, emphasizing the importance of employer-provided training and collaboration with organizations like the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).
