The import duty of unrefined sugar without extra taste-odor color has been fixed at Tk 1,500 per tonne, According to the gazette notification signed by the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The duty on other sugar has been fixed at tk 3,000 per tonne. It is known that the customs duty for unrefined sugar was tk 3000 and the duty for other sugar was Rs 6000.
Currently, sugar importers have to pay a fixed tax of 3000 taka per ton of sugar in addition to 15 percent VAT, 30 percent regulatory, and 2 percent advance income tax. It has been reduced to 1 thousand 500 taka. All in all, the total tax imposed on each kg of sugar till it reaches the consumer is 60 percent, which is 40 to 42 taka.Currently, sugar is being sold at 135 to 140 taka per kg in the market. Sugar production is less than 1 percent of the country’s demand. Now about 30 thousand tons are produced locally. Imports are 22 to 24 lakh tons.
