A proposal has been submitted to the government to increase the price of sugar to 120 Bangladeshi Taka per kilogram, by the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation. Sugar used to be sold at a price ranging from 40 to 60 Taka in the past, but it is currently being sold at 100 Taka per kilogram. The proposal aims to further raise the price to 120 Taka.
The goal is to ensure fair prices for farmers’ hard work. Modern methods of sugarcane cultivation, known as “Akhi Ropon,” have been introduced, which will help farmers significantly. Furthermore, efforts are being made to modernize the sugar industry, which will bring about extensive changes in the country’s sugar production.
In addition, for the 2023-2024 sugarcane season, there is hoped to cultivate sugar cane on 55,000 metric tons of land across five districts: Faridpur, Magura, Gopalganj, Kushtia, and Rajbari, with an expected yield of 55,000 metric tons of sugar. This initiative is seen as a way to revitalize the sugar industry in Bangladesh.
